Description
From flying bugs to swimming whales, from microscopic bacteria to giant redwood trees, evolution has shaped every aspect of the living world around us. But what does evolution actually mean, and how does it work? And has the theory of evolution itself changed over time? The famous works of Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel laid the foundation, and plenty of more modern ideas have contributed to how we think about evolution.
Graduate student and Ph.D. candidate in Integrative Biology Matt Ming will explore how our thinking about evolutionary theory has changed, and how scientists are continuing to learn more about this all-important force of nature. Arrive an hour ahead of the 8 p.m. science talk to enjoy kids’ activities, a peek at natural history displays and a guided tour of the Brackenridge Field Laboratory (sturdy shoes and water recommended).
Schedule:
7:00 p.m.: Kid’s activities and natural history displays
7:15 p.m.: Guided tour of Brackenridge Field Laboratory
8:00 p.m.: Talk begins
8:45 p.m.: Q&A with speaker
Participation Notes:
- Sturdy shoes and water are recommended for the guided tour of Brackenridge Field Lab.
- While Science Under the Stars aims to host all events outdoors, sometimes weather conditions or volunteer capacity may require that the event is moved inside the laboratory building.
Parking: Free parking for Brackenridge Field Lab is available in two lots:
- A small lot in front of Brackenridge Field Laboratory, which contains two dedicated handicap parking spots.
- A larger overflow lot at the Lake Austin Centre Building (LAC) at 3001 Lake Austin Blvd. This is the building directly NW of Brackenridge Field Laboratory along Lake Austin Blvd. Signs state that parking is only allowed for UT permit-holders. Please disregard these signs.
